THE PROHIBITION OF CHILD MARRIAGE ACT, 2006
Legal age of Marriage in India
– 18 years for female
– 21 years for Male
Any marriage below these ages is a violation of law.
Child Marriage
It denies the basic rights to
1. Health
2. Nutrition
3. Education
4. Freedom from Violance
5. Abuse
6. Exploitation
7. Deprives the child of their childhood
Implementation of the Act
1. Earlier there was an act called Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929 (it was repealed)
2. Government of India enacted Prohibition of Child Marriage act, 2006
3. But Government of Tamilnadu framed and notified state rules on 30th December 2009
4. Under this, government appointed District Social welfare officer as Child Marriage Prohibition officer
5. Their work is to act immediately on any information received regarding child marriage from any mode of communication
6. They have the provision to prohibit child marriage, protect and provide relief to victims and also provide punishment to those who indulge and promote such child marriages
7. In Panchayat level, a Panchayat level core committee was constituted with Panchayat President as a chairperson
8. Their work is to report and prevent such child marriages within their area
9. Government also create awareness among public through several Information, Education and Communication (IEC) programmes
Achievement
1. Since 2008, 8834 child marriages have been stopped in Tamilnadu through this act
2. In 2018 alone, 1965 child marriages have been stopped
STATE AWARD FOR GIRL CHILD EMPOWERMENT
1. This award is to recognise, appreciate the efforts of a Girl Child
2. Mainly to prevent crimes against girl child
3. Every year on January 24th (National Girl Child Day), this award will be provided with a citation and cash prize of one lakh
4. In the year 2018-2019, State Girl Child Award was given to Ms.K.R.Rakshana of Karur District
5. It was given for her continuous support in addressing social and environmental issues
6. She is a role model for many girl children
