1. Ransomware Exercise:

  • Conducted by India and the United Kingdom.
  • The exercise aims to stimulate a significant, widespread cyber security incident affecting organisations within a country.
  • Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure have increased significantly in the recent past.
  • India has observed a 70% increase in ransomware activities in 2021.

2. Two-year extension to Thermal Power Plants on SO2 norms:

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has extended the deadlines for Thermal Power Plants to install pollution control technologies and comply with new SO2 (Sulphur Dioxide) emission norms.
  • Major Pollutants from coal-fired power plants: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), SO2 and Particulate Matter (PM)
  • According to the Centre for Science and Environment, thermal power plants account for more than 60% of total industrial emissions of particulate matter, 45% of SO2, 30% of NOx and more than 80% of mercury in India.
  • India’s first and the world’s highest geothermal energy project – ONGC to pump Geothermal power at 14,000 feet in Ladakh.

3. WEST: A new I – STEM initiative launched:

  • WEST – Women in Engineering, Science and Technology
  • I-STEM: Indian Science Technology and Engineering facilities Map
  • I-STEM is a national web portal for sharing research equipment and facilities.
  • Through the WEST initiative, I-STEM will provide a separate platform to scientifically inclined women researchers, scientists, and technologists for pursuing research in basic or applied sciences in frontier areas of science and engineering.

4. International Conference on Space 2022:

  • Held in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Theme – “Nurturing the NewSpace in India”
  • The 7th biennial “Bengaluru Space Expo (BSX – 2022) was also held in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Recently, ISRO has successfully launched PSLV C-53 carrying 3 Singaporean satellites: DS-EO, NeuSAR, and SCOOB-1, into an intended orbit at an altitude of 570 kilometres measured from the equator, with a low inclination of 10 degrees.

5. India’s first prototype of Drone Transportation of Human Organs:

  • Unveiled by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
  • Chennai-based MGM Healthcare co-developed a drone technology capable of carrying organs up to a distance of 20km initially.
  • Bharatmala Pariyojana – a new umbrella programme for the highways sector, will also help in the transportation of organs across India.

6. India witnesses reduction in Pupil teacher Ratio over last 10 years:

  • According to the annual report of UNESCO, India has faced an acute shortage of Pupil Teacher Ratio over the last 10 years.
  • The primary School pupil-teacher ratio comes down to 26.3 in 2020 from 43 in 2010.
  • UNESCO’s state of education report for India 2021, ‘No Teacher, No Class’ focuses on teachers around 1.1 lakh schools in India are single-teacher entities.
  • As per the data, a total of 11.16 lakh teaching positions in schools lie vacant in India (69% are in rural areas)

7. International Travel Award 2023:

  • Received by West Bengal.
  • For the best destination for culture by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.
  • The Durga Puja festival in Kolkata, one of West Bengal’s most significant festivals, was added to the representative list of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021.

8. CHHATA Scheme:

  • Community Harnessing and Harvesting rainwater Artificially from Terrace to Aquifer (CHHATA)
  • Launched by the Government of Odisha.
  • To implement the rooftop rainwater harvesting system.

9. NASA’s Experiment MOXIE successfully creates oxygen on Mars:

  • It is a part of NASA’s Perseverance rover and Mars 2020 mission, the MIT-led Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, or MOXIE, which has been producing oxygen from the Red Planet’s carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere.

10. International Literacy Day 2022:

  • Observed on 8th September.
  • Theme 2022 – “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces”
